The Aristocats
The delight in this Disney movie, set in a charmingly detailed Paris in the early 20th century, is the brilliant matching of voices to visuals. Hermione Baddeley is the aristo-owner of elegant feline Duchess (Eva Gabor) who, with her three kittens, is befriended by Phil Harris's alley cat after the butler, Edgar (Roddy Maude-Roxby), has tried to do away with them because the old lady has left everything to the cats in her will. The Sherman brothers' songs are out of the top drawer and Wolfgang Reitherman proves that his direction of The Jungle Book was no fluke.

Dumbo
Although it was directed by Ben Sharpsteen, every frame of this Disney tale about the outcast elephant with huge ears was personally approved by Uncle Walt himself. The film won an Oscar for its score, with songs such as When I See an Elephant Fly and Baby of Mine (from the heartbreaking mother-child reunion) lingering long in the memory. On the animation side, the highlight is the parade of pink elephants after Dumbo and Timothy Mouse get tipsy. Made for a fraction of the cost of previous Disney animations, this may be one of the studio's shortest features, but it's also among the best.

Mr Holland's Opus
Richard Dreyfuss strikes just the right note of sentiment and truth here as music teacher Glenn Holland, who wonders if 30 years at the high school chalkface have been worthwhile - especially as he sacrificed his ambitions to be a composer. A shrewd mix of Goodbye, Mr Chips and It's a Wonderful Life, it adds harsher ingredients, including Mr Holland's neglect of his wife and hearing-impaired son to further the education of his students. The way Dreyfuss lightens up his character (for example, incorporating jazz in the syllabus) makes the film satisfyingly accessible to young and old.

The Mighty Ducks
Playing a disgraced lawyer coaching the world's worst ice-hockey team as part of his community service, former Brat Packer Emilio Estevez makes the best of what, the ice apart, could hardly be called a cool assignment. It's The Bad News Bears with skates, and you know from the first face-off how it's going to end. But director Stephen Herek pitches every gag and moment of melodrama at just the right level. Released here as Champions, the film spawned two sequels and inspired Disney to form its own pro-league club, called, unsurprisingly, the Mighty Ducks.
